Doha: The Student Teams Competition: Environmental Awareness and Climate Change Campaign - Spring 2025, which was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) in collaboration with Qatar University (QU), concluded today.
According to Qatar News Agency, the competition aimed to enhance environmental awareness among students and the university community and consolidate the concepts of sustainability and climate change within extracurricular student activities. The event was attended by HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie.
In his speech at the closing ceremony, HE President of QU, Dr. Omar Al Ansari emphasized that the university consistently strives to enhance environmental awareness among its students and the university community, noting that such initiatives represent an important step towards building an informed generation capable of facing the challenges of climate change.
His Excellency explained that the competition's theme embodies a vital issue that everyone experiences and is affected by on a daily basis. He noted that the issue of the environment and climate change represents a true model of integration between academic and environmental institutions, where each party plays a complementary role in supporting these initiatives.
Al Ansari praised the existing partnership between QU and MOECC, and told the students that their participation in the competition is not just a passing moment, but rather the beginning of a real change in their beliefs and behaviors towards the environment. He calls on them to spread environmental awareness in their community, whether in education, the media, or the economy.
Commenting on the occasion, Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Affairs at MOECC, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullatif Al Maslamani, lauded the students' efforts in spreading environmental awareness and instilling a culture of sustainability within the university community. He stressed that such events represent a fundamental pillar in building societal environmental awareness that reflects young people's interest in vital issues, most notably climate change.
Al Maslamani said that the outstanding student engagement witnessed is a clear message that the new generation understands the magnitude of environmental challenges and is actively seeking to contribute to addressing them through initiative and teamwork. This gives hope and confidence for a better future.
He noted that the Ministry believes in the importance of involving youth in environmental action and is committed to continuing this cooperation through more programs and initiatives aimed at building an informed and proactive generation. Additionally, he praised the fruitful partnership with QU, noting that it represents a successful model of cooperation between state and higher education institutions, where roles complement each other to achieve national environmental goals.
Speaking to QNA, the winners expressed their deep pride in their accomplishments in this significant event, which provided them with a real opportunity to express their deep interest in environmental issues and contribute to spreading environmental awareness among youth and students.
The competitions of student teams focused on environmental challenges and proposing practical solutions that could be implemented at the university and community levels.
