Gaza: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that the number of displaced people from the city of Rafah had risen to about 110,000 as a result of the Israeli attack that began on May 6. On Tuesday, Israel announced the invasion of the Palestinian side of the Rafah land crossing between Gaza and Egypt, as part of what it claims is a 'limited scope' operation that has been continuing in Rafah since Monday, including ground incursions and air strikes. The UNRWA statement on Friday confirmed that the forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza continues in the absence of a safe zone in the Strip. The statement stressed that the only hope to stop the tragedy that the Palestinians are suffering is an "urgent ceasefire." On Tuesday, the Israeli army announced 'operational control' over the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, hours after Hamas announced its approval of the mediators' proposal for a ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners and detainees. Since Octobe r 7, the war on Gaza has left more than 113,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000 missing amid massive destruction and famine that claimed the lives of children and the elderly. Israel continues the war despite the issuance of a resolution by the UN Security Council to stop the fighting immediately, and also despite the International Court of Justice demanding immediate measures to prevent acts of 'genocide' and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
