UNRWA Criticizes Gaza Aid Mechanism at OIC Meeting in Turkiye

Doha: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini has voiced strong criticism of a newly established aid mechanism for Gaza, describing it as humiliating and life-threatening. Lazzarini characterized the initiative as a "death-trap" during his address at the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Turkiye, stating it causes more harm than good to the affected populations.

According to Qatar News Agency, Lazzarini's remarks focused on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza following the Israeli aggression that began on October 7, 2023. He reported that over 55,000 individuals, predominantly women and children, have been killed. Lazzarini highlighted the severe trauma and loss suffered by survivors, emphasizing the permanent impact on their lives.

Lazzarini further addressed the situation in the occupied West Bank, noting unprecedented levels of displacement from northern camps since 1967. He expressed concern over the systematic destruction of public infrastructure, which he argued prevents Palestinians from returning and alters the demographic composition of the camps. He warned of the steady progress of annexation efforts and the undermining of a viable Palestinian state.

The Commissioner-General revealed that at least 318 UNRWA personnel have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began, many alongside their families. He also noted that international UNRWA staff have been forced to leave the occupied Palestinian territory due to recent Israeli legislation. Despite facing arrests, intimidation, and harassment, UNRWA's Palestinian staff continue to demonstrate courage and resilience.

Lazzarini highlighted the severe financial challenges facing UNRWA, warning that without additional funding, the agency would have to make unprecedented operational decisions across the region. He called on the OIC and its member states to support efforts to ensure Palestine Refugees have access to protection and essential services.
