Washington: US President Donald Trump stated today that the coming week will be critical regarding whether the United States will intervene in the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said that the US might carry out a strike or might choose not to, adding that the next week would be a decisive one and may not even need to be completed depending on how events unfold.
According to Qatar News Agency, Trump also revealed that Iran had proposed entering negotiations with Washington and even suggested the possibility of a visit to the White House. He described this proposal as a bold move on Iran's part, but warned that the opportunity for talks might have already passed.
In response, Iran's mission to the United Nations denied making any such request, stating in a post on Platform X (formerly Twitter) that no formal proposal for a White House visit had been submitted.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth declared that the military is ready to act if the president decides to take action against Iran. During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, he stressed that ensuring the safety of U.S. troops remains a top concern, though he did not provide details on any specific plans for military operations.
The situation escalated sharply on Jun. 13, when Israel launched airstrikes targeting Iranian military bases and command-and-control systems. This sudden move followed the collapse of indirect US-Iran nuclear talks, which had been facilitated by Oman in Muscat and Rome over recent months.
