US Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump’s Sweeping Global Tariffs

Washington: The US Supreme Court issued a ruling today striking down the sweeping global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imported goods. The Court ruled that the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to implement these duties exceeded the President's constitutional authority.

According to Qatar News Agency, the decision clarified that the US Constitution grants Congress, rather than the President, the sole authority to levy taxes and tariffs. President Trump had invoked the emergency law to bypass legislative approval, making him the first US president to use the IEEPA for the purpose of broad-scale tariff imposition.

The administration stated it is currently exploring alternative legal avenues to maintain a portion of the tariffs, including existing statutes related to national security and addressing unfair trade practices.
