Doha: US Forces Korea (USFK) Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson reaffirmed that the United States remains fully committed to the defense of South Korea and strengthening the alliance, in response to a recent report on a potential troop cut of American troops stationed in the country.
According to Qatar News Agency, Brunson highlighted the 28,500-strong USFK as a "physical manifestation of the US ironclad commitment." His remarks were made in the wake of a news report suggesting that Washington is considering withdrawing approximately 4,500 troops, or 16% of the command, relocating them to other locations in the Indo-Pacific region.
While Gen. Brunson acknowledged that "all things," including changes to the force structure, can be up for discussion during "interwar years" to address technological advancements and the contemporary operating environment, he emphasized the strategic importance of USFK. He underscored its critical role in an ever-evolving security landscape, reflecting the continued importance of US-South Korea alliance.
