The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today that heat waves cause the death of more than 175,000 people annually in Europe. WHO said that approximately 489 000 heat-related deaths occurred each year between 2000 and 2019, with the Region accounting for 36 percent or, on average, more than 175 000 deaths every year. The World Health Organization said that over the past 20 years, there has been a 30 percent increase in heat-related mortality, with heat-related deaths increasing in almost all countries of the Region where monitoring is in place.
