Davos: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Wednesday for deploying European troops of no less than 200,000 troops to ensure Ukraine's security and avoid a new invasion in the event of a truce with Russia. In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zelensky emphasized the necessity of this measure to safeguard his country's sovereignty amidst ongoing tensions.
According to Qatar News Agency, Zelensky mentioned that "200,000 is a minimum," and highlighted the potential for US President Donald Trump to impose "comprehensive sanctions" on Russia. These sanctions would focus on the energy sector and aim to provide Ukraine with necessary defense resources to confront Russian aggression.
Zelensky also addressed the complexity of halting the conflict, which has resulted in significant loss of life and destruction in Ukraine. He acknowledged the challenges President Trump might face in negotiating a peace settlement that upholds Ukraine's territorial integrity.
Furthermore, Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine's stance on the occupied territories, declaring that his country would not recognize these areas as Russian. He hinted at a strategic concession, suggesting the possibility of temporarily relinquishing control of these regions to cease hostilities, yet firmly maintaining Ukraine's claim over them.
