New York, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei, Bahrain's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York, Coordinator of the Arab Group for Security Council Reform, delivered the Arab Group's statement, during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting on the question of representation, increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the council. At the conclusion of the intergovernmental negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform during the 78th session of the UNGA, Al Rowaiei underscored the Arab Group's commitment to continuing discussions in the upcoming session and its active participation in achieving comprehensive reform of the Security Council. Al Rowaiei welcomed the General Assembly's decision to extend IGN on Security Council reform into the 79th session. He underscored the Arab Group's confidence that these negotiations are the only viable platform for reaching an agreement on council expansion and reform that enjoys broad political supp ort among member states. Al Rowaiei commended the efforts undertaken during the current session, which have developed discussions on reform and introduced innovative approaches that have strengthened cooperation and understanding among member states, particularly concerning the various reform proposals and efforts to bridge differing views in a constructive way. He reiterated the Arab Group's position, advocating for a permanent Arab seat with full powers in any future expansion of the Security Council, along with proportional Arab representation in the non-permanent seat category to ensure equitable representation in an expanded council.
