A new study has shown that uncontrolled diabetes accelerates brain aging in those with diabetes at a faster rate than in those without the disease. According to the study, conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, the brain age of those with diabetes, which is difficult to control, was 4 years older than the brains of those without the disease. The researchers relied on analyzing magnetic resonance imaging scans of the brain of more than 31,000 people, aged between 40 and 70, from the records of the British Biobank database. During the study, artificial intelligence was used to measure the relative brain age of each individual. In contrast, the research team concluded that healthy lifestyle changes could help prevent neurological aging, noting that those who were physically active and did not smoke were less likely to develop brain aging.
