The United Nations has announced the appointment of Dr. Mohammed Awad Al Hassan, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, as Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission to Iraq, making him the first Arab to assume this position. A United Nations statement said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Dr. Al Hassan, succeeding Dutchwoman Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, who moved to work as the United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon in May.
