Over 50,000 livestock heads imported for Eid al-Adha

Dr. Ibrahim Yousif, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Animal Wealth Resources at the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture said that about 50,000 sheep and 300 cows were imported to meet demand during the three days of Eid.

Dr. Ibrahim said that in addition to 50,300 livestock heads, 2,600 tonnes of chilled and frozen red meat and 7,500 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry were imported during May 15 to June 24, in preparation for Eid Al Adha requirements.

The Acting Assistant Undersecretary affirmed the ministry's readiness for Eid Al Adha through a plan to cover licensed sacrificial slaughter places by providing veterinarians for examination along with licensed slaughterhouse doctors to facilitate and speed up the examination process.

He confirmed that about 14 veterinarians work 24 hours at Khalifa bin Salman Port, Bahrain Airport, and King Fahd Causeway to monitor meat of both types, red and white, whether it is chilled or frozen, in addition to the veterinary supervision of sheep and livestock imported.

Dr. Ibrahim ruled out an increase in the prices of meat and livestock during Eid season, due to the abundance of supply this year.

He noted that live sheep are imported from Somalia, Oman, and UAE, while chilled and frozen meat are also imported from several countries, including Kenya, Pakistan, India, Kazakhstan, Australia, New Zealand and others.

He added that chilled and frozen poultry is imported from Saudi Arabia, Brazil, China, Ukraine, Turkey and other countries.
