Doha: The State of Qatar has taken a decisive diplomatic step by sending two identical letters to the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and the President of the Security Council for the month of July, Zenon Mukongo Ngay, who is also the Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United Nations. These letters address the recent developments following attacks by Iran on Qatari territory, which Qatar views as a blatant violation of its sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.

According to Qatar News Agency, the letters were dispatched by Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani. The correspondence highlights Iran's targeting of the Qatari tanker Al Rekayyat as it transited the Strait of Hormuz on July 7, 2026. Additionally, the letters detail a missile attack on July 12, 2026, which the Qatari Armed Forces intercepted, although falling debris injured three people, including a child. Another missile attack was intercepted on July 17, 2026, with Qatar taking necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and citizens.

The letters strongly condemned Iran's actions, labeling them as dangerous escalations that threaten regional and international stability. They argue that these attacks violate international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which demanded an immediate cessation of such hostilities.

Qatar holds Iran fully responsible under international law for these attacks and their consequences, demanding full compensation for damages. The letters affirm Qatar's right to self-defense as per Article 51 of the UN Charter and express the country's readiness to take measures necessary for its protection.
