Doha: The Qatar Calendar House, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, has organized an astronomy exhibition aimed at school students. The event took place on April 20 and 21 as part of the 9th Qatar Schools Astronomy Olympiad, themed "The Earth and Its Size in Relation to Sunspots."
According to Qatar News Agency, Eng. Faisal Al Ansari, the General Supervisor of the Competition and Executive Director of the Qatar Calendar House, stated that the first day of the exhibition was dedicated to girls' schools from the preparatory and secondary levels. On the second day, boys' schools and international schools had the opportunity to participate. A total of 80 schools were involved, including 36 girls' schools, 44 boys' schools, and various international schools.
The Qatar Calendar House is overseeing the 9th edition of the Qatar Schools Astronomy Olympiad. The competition features three astronomical projects: calculating the size of the Earth relative to sunspots, defining the solar activity cycle, and calculating current and future solar activity. Students from all preparatory and secondary schools are tasked with completing the first two projects, while the final project is reserved for secondary school students.
The primary goal of the competition is to promote astronomical knowledge among students attending independent, private, and language schools in Qatar. By organizing and sponsoring this event, the Qatar Calendar House aims to prepare a team of male and female students to participate in the International Astronomy Olympiad.
