Sinners Breaks Oscar Nominations Record

Los angeles: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, has topped the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards for 2026, with the winners set to be announced at a ceremony on Mar. 15. Set in the pre-World War II era, the film broke the record for the highest number of Oscar nominations, receiving 16 nominations. It earned nominations in nearly every possible category, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.

According to Qatar News Agency, the film surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. One Battle After Another ranked second with 13 nominations, including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. Meanwhile, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value each received nine nominations, while Hamnet garnered eight nominations.

On the other hand, the Academy selected the film The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, for the shortlist for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. This marks Ben Hania's third nomination for this prestigious award, following her previous nominations for The Man Who Sold His Skin in 2021 and Four Daughters in 2024.

The Voice of Hind Rajab, supported by the Doha Film Institute grants program, documents the final moments of a Gazan girl named Hind Rajab. The film won the Grand Jury Prize Silver Lion at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025. It blends real recordings of emergency calls with dramatic reenactments, reconstructing the harrowing 90 minutes during which the Palestinian child was trapped inside a car under gunfire.
